In America alone, various states have their own laws and regulations regarding DUI. In Georgia, for instance, first of all, it’s unlawful to possess a car without liability insurance. Allowing an individual with no insurance coverage operate the car is likewise illegal.

In Georgia the minimum required liability coverage are the following:

2. A single accident, 2 or more persons physical injuries – $50,000.00

3. A single accident, property damage – $25,000.00

Whatever the case, the law enforcement officer will request the motorist for proof of required liability insurance. IDs or documents from the insurance provider should be presented.

When the insurance policy has lapsed in the time of the accident, the Georgia Department of Motor Vehicles will suspend the drivers license of the operator until insurance coverage has been presented.

So with DUI scenarios, law enforcement officer would require a specific type of automobile insurance known as SR 22 car insurance. SR22 car insurance is a proof of financial responsibility of the driver. It’s an assurance that the driver will maintain the minimum insurance plan for a specific period of time.

SR 22 car insurances are unique car insurance such that the DMV and the auto insurance companies classify particularly those high-risk motorists that require this high-risk insurance.

High-risk drivers are generally the ones that display bad driving practices. Demographics like the gender and age assist insurance companies decide on whether or not to issue SR 22 car insurance.

1. Owner policy – This is the type of policy for the car owner. This is issued with collision and comprehensive coverage among other additional coverage.

2. Non-owner policy – This type of policy are for drivers who does not own a car. The car insurance provider files the SR 22 after which the Georgia Department of Motor Vehicles will receive a copy as well.

The Georgia DMV determine the time table the effectivity date of the SR 22. All this is dependent on the gravity of the violation. A DUI conviction could take many years.

It is vital that the SR 22 car insurance is not lapsed or cancelled until teh DMV inform you that you may no longer need the SR22 on file. Additional fees and penalties will be applied to the driver if the SR 22 car insurance is not renewed.

Reader’s Question:

What is the minimum auto insurance coverage in Georgia? Are there any policy I need to purchase?

Andrea

Columbus, GA

Like any other rules, auto insurance in Georgia sets a minimum amount of auto insurance. The liability policy is required by the states and the coverage will only apply to the person whose name is indicated on it. As compared with other states in the US, Georgia has the highest least amount of liability coverage required to drivers.

The minimum liability auto insurance coverage in Georgia are:

  • $25,000 Bodily Injury Liability limits of per injured person up to a total of
  • $50,000 per accident, and
  • $25,000 Property Damage Liability coverage

Although auto insurance in Georgia does not require collision and comprehensive coverage, drivers will need this coverage to pay the cost of repairing his/her vehicle. Other than paying the cost of vehicle repair of the victim, the insured should also think of his/her needs after the accident. Collision and comprehensive coverage can ease the financial burden of shelling out money for this. In case you got your car damaged because an animal immediately crossed the road, this coverage will still pay for the vehicle repair.

Worst case scenario that can happen to a driver is to get hit by a vehicle that is not insured. If collision and comprehensive insurance will pay the vehicle cost, uninsured/underinsured will take care of your medical expenses. You can also use this when the at-fault driver does not have sufficient auto insurance coverage to pay the total amount of costs.

Reader’s Question:

I was driving from a party one night and must have dozed off. The next thing I knew, I had run over a dog. Fortunately, there was no roadkill because the dog survived the operations and is now recuperating in a hospital. However, the medical bills I have yet to pay the animal hospital in Atlanta, Georgia are skyrocketing by the day. Can my car insurance policy help me in any way? I have a comprehensive coverage.

Jillian

Atlanta, GA

Hi Jillian. What a very noble thing to do to get out of your car, check the animal you ran into, and bring it to a hospital. When other motorists would have just left the poor thing for dead or assumed it was already roadkill, you took time to care. I would like to help you find solutions to your problem. There is already this thing called a pet injury coverage. It’s like a supplementary car insurance policy for those people who have pets and like to carry them around always. So, in cases of an accident, the insurance pays for the hospitalization of your pet. Some auto insurance companies will pay up to $500, I think. Now, since the dog you hit was not your pet, Property damage liability type of insurance will cover those pets that are not yours but are victims of a collision that involves the planholder. Pets are classified as property, in insurance lingo.

Ask the assistance of your insurance provider just to be sure. Check also if they have that kind of insurance in Atlanta, Georgia, because here in North Carolina we still don’t have that. You’ll soon overcome these obstacles. May God bless your kind soul.

Paul

West Dougherty, GA

If you stopped paying on your auto insurance policy it would be cancelled due to non-payment and cause problems for you. One problem would be that this cancellation will show up on your credit record as non-payment and not only be a black mark on your credit rating but also make it difficult to find car insurance in the future. Many insurance providers will not want to insure an individual that has previously not paid on their auto insurance policy.

Reader’s Question:

My mother bought me a vehicle. She lives in Alabama and I live in Georgia. Can she insure it in Alabama and I register it here in GA?

Ed

Augusta, GA

The Georgia laws states that you will have to have your car insured in Georgia if your registration and license plates are from GA. Even if Georgia did permit you to have an out of state insurance company cover your car it would likely be hard to find an insurance company that would cover a vehicle that was insured in Alabama but driven and kept out of state in Georgia.

The Georgia Motor Vehicle Division of the Department of Revenue states that car owners and lessees in this state are required to carry continuous GA mandatory liability insurance coverage on their car(s) to:Legally operate a vehicle(s);Register and get Georgia license plates (tags); and, Renew, transfer or replace their existing Georgia license plates (tags).

If your name is on the title of the vehicle your mother purchased for you then it should not be hard for you to obtain your own car insurance on the car. If your name is not on the title then there are some insurance carriers that will permit you to get insurance without insurable interest in the vehicle, but it would not be difficult for you to place coverage on the vehicle if your name was added to the car’s title.
