Reader’s Question:

I want to know if an SR22 is required in Georgia?

Randy

Atlanta, GA

Yes, an SR-22 can be required of a motorist in Georgia under certain circumstances.

The Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) states about the Form SR-22, Georgia Financial Responsibility Insurance Certificate, future proof of insurance when stating suspensions, revocations and cancellations of a driver’s license.

So there are a some reasons why Georgia may require an SR22 form. If your license has been revoked, suspended, or canceled and you are going to obtain your license reinstated it is likely that GA may require you to file a SR-22. You can verify with the GA DDS to find out all the reasons the state may require this certificate of financial responsibility.

Reader’s Question:

I got a ticket for a unlawful U-turn in Augusta, Georgia. Do you know how many points I will get for that violation?

Larry

Augusta, GA

The Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) states that after a conviction of a traffic offense, the court will forward notice of that infraction to this state agency and points may be assessed.

The GA DDS points list an illegal U-turn is not specifically listed and thus would appear to fall under the heading of “all other moving infractions” which is assigned three points.

According to the Georgia Department of Driver Services, according to GA Code Section 40-5-57, points related to moving infraction convictions, such as the three points assessed for an illegal U-turn, remain on your driving record for 24 months (2 years).

The DDS also states that the actual infraction remain on your record indefinitely. So if you are convicted of making an illegal U-turn in Georgia then the conviction for a will remain on your driving record permanently.

To get more information on the cost of your fine for your illegal U-turn citation, you may contact the court listed on your ticket.
