Reader’s Question:

My driver’s license was suspended for two years for driving without license in another state. My driver’s license was issued in Louisville, KY. Does that mean I will not be able to get a driver’s license and car insurance in my new home state of Georgia? To my understanding, GA is not a reciprocal state for driver’s license records.

Augusta, GA

No. You will not likely be allowed to obtain a driver’s license in Augusta, Georgia with your driver’s license in your previous state of Kentucky being suspended. Though you’re correct that Georgia is not part of the Drivers License Compact (DLC), GA, however is part of the Non-Resident Violator Compact (NRVC). It has separate agreements with other states to share ticket information even without being part of the DLC. So, GA shares information about licensing and violation convictions with other states.

When applying for a Georgia license, you would need to inform the GA Department of Driver Services (DDS) about the suspension of your license in KY. Georgia state laws require a wait period until you can reinstate your KY license to drive again before you’re allowed to obtain a driver’s license in their state. To make sure that this is true in your specific situation and to see if you can obtain any kind of restricted license in the mean time, you may want to contact GA DDS.

Without having a valid driver’s license, it will be difficult if not impossible to get auto insurance since having a suspended license means you’re not supposed to drive a car.

Reader’s Question:

I have several traffic tickets in Albany Georgia. If I take a motorist improvement class will points come off my driver license?

Michelle

Albany, GA

In Georgia, if you take a Driver Improvement Course you can get points removed from your driving history. Once every five years you can take this course in GA.

You may not take a Georgia Defensive Driving course / traffic school for car insurance reduction and point reduction or for more than one infraction. So you will need to choose which reason you want to take the class for make sure that the course will provide you the insurance reduction or points reduction you want since you cannot take it for both reasons.

According to the GA Department of Driver Services (DDS), they do not allow motorist to take traffic school classes over the Internet or on a computer. The DDS only permits classroom instruction for its approved driving school. The DDS should be able to provide you answers on other questions you have about this type of class or if there are other ways for reducing the points on your license.
