Reader’s Question:

What if I don’t want to list a household member on my car insurance policy in Georgia?

Ben

Marietta, GA

You should always include all household members on your application in your car insurance.

With each insurers it is different. Some insurance companies sells insurance policies for different insurance carriers. Some auto insurance application will ask you the appropriate questions to meet the insurer’s guidelines and the state rules/laws.

Insurance companies need to know about all household members because states laws for personal liability sometimes include all household members. So, the insurance company is representing you and covering you so they need to be aware of the entire risk they are protecting.

Reader’s Question:

If the tags on vehicle are expired, is the car insurance coverage still in effect? I live in Sandy Springs Georgia.

Robin

Sandy Springs, GA

Insurance carriers terms and guidelines can vary so you will need to verify with your insurance company to find out if your car would be covered if your tags or license plates were expired in Sandy Springs GA.

Generally, your insurance contract is typically in effect regardless of tag or license status. Unless there is an exclusion in your insurance policy then likely your auto insurance would be in effect even if your registration is expired.

If you have let your license plates expire, most states have grace periods so check if you can have them reinstated and up to date without a penalty by verifying with your Department of Motor Vehicles in Georgia.

Reader’s Question:

How long do points remain on your driving Motor Vehicle Record in Roswell, Georgia? I got two speeding tickets for two points each, and a minor traffic violation for one point. Will my insurance provider in Roswell still see the offense after doing a point reduction class?

Aaron

Roswell, GA

The A Department of Driver Services (DDS) states that you can take a point reduction defensive driving course once every five years. You cannot take the traffic school class online or on a computer. The DDS only permits classroom instruction for this driving school.

According to the DDS information sheet on the defensive driving course, you may not take the traffic school for auto point reduction or insurance reduction or for more than 1 violation. It also seems that the points are reduced but that the offense stays on your driving record. If this is the case, you insurance provider can indeed see the violations and thus rate you on them.

It will depend upon your insurance company’s rating system how these moving violations will affect your car insurance premium. If your insurance rates increase, it may be time to shop around for a new insurance company. Reader’s Question:

My wife and I have two cars in GA. We want to add my 19 year old daughter to our policy as an occasional driver, will that be cheaper than adding her as a primary?

Harold

Albany, GA

It really depends on the Georgia insurance providers and their guidelines as well as their rating systems if it would be cheaper to have your daughter listed as an primary driver or occasional driver on your car.

Not all insurance companies in Georgia rate using primary driver or occasional driver . Typically, an occasional driver is rated at a lower rate than a primary motorist by insurance companies that do have these different designations. Plus, it may be possible to have an individual listed as the primary on one car, but not on all household cars.

Regardless of the cost, you will have to tell the use as defined by your specific insurance company. So speak with your insurance broker and see if they have both types of motorist designations and if so what he or she would advise to place your 19 year old daughter as.

Cheap SR22 Insurance Rates For Sports Cars?

Q: Can I get cheap SR22 insurance for a sports car, or am I kidding myself?

A: Cheap SR22 insurance is a relative concept, so I guess it depends. What you can do is knock down your current premium price by looking into certain money saving options provided by your insurance company. Even a sports car owner can take advantage of these opportunities.

One big importance is the safety of your vehicle. Most new cars come equipped with the latest safety gear, but with sports cars you need to be extra careful since they’re more dangerous. Anti theft devices are also key, especially if you have comprehensive coverage, because a sports car is more likely to get stolen.

If you can find a car club (try looking in car magazines for listings) for your vehicle, become a member. Not only will you increase your knowledge, but you will also save money on your SR22 insurance. With all of these discounts, there’s no reason for you to be paying top dollar on your car insurance coverage.
